GEOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES FOR THE ARCHAELOGICAL AREAS

As regards the accessibility of archaeological sites for tourists with disabilities, it seems that almost all sites have accessible pathways for people with disabilities thanks to the universally recognized principle that natural and cultural attractions must be organised so as to be admired by all. The survey shows that only the cognitive area of Segesta specifically provides pathways for disabled people in wheelchairs, allowing cars with disabled people on board to follow a road which arrives at the temple, inside which an iron pathway has been built for wheelchair transit.

In the archaeological area of Selinunte there are electric trains, operated by a private company, which pass through the site, allowing the disabled and persons with reduced mobility to visit the archaeological treasures present. Also located within the area is a tower, known as the 'House of the Traveller', which was built by Camillo Camilliani for defensive purposes, but in the twentieth century, the structure became guest quarters for scholars who stayed at Selinunte. Today it is a museum.

The only archaeological site which is not managed by the Ministry is the Island of Mozia, since the island is private and is owned and managed by the G. Whitaker foundation of Palermo. The island is accessible for disabled people thanks to the presence of roads which are still passable. As regards the landing stage in the Ettore Infersa district and at the Whitaker Museum it must be remembered that the implementation of a series of accessible paths for people with sensory and motor disabilities has been realized. Lilibeo is the only area which is still not well defined due to the fact that work is currently in progress to establish facilities, including two car parks which are being built. To access the site, which is located within the historic centre of Marsala, you must go through huge arch of the gate of the Baglio Anselmi, an ancient wine cellar and now a museum. There are no refreshment areas within the site because, as it is situated in the city, bars and restaurants are easily accessible by tourists.

In 2002, a project for the reali-zation of the Lilibeo Archaeological Park was drafted which included a series of interventions aimed at lovers of archaeological tourism in the province of Trapani. In the specific case relating to the blind, the project foresees the construction of an audio guided tour with the installation of an audio pathway delivering sound, music and voices.
